MADELENA

Madelena is a singer songwriter whose years of crafting her songwriting skills have resulted in an organic, personalised sound. The abstract nature of her lyrics allows room for listeners to make their own interpretations and connections to the songs. Her words can be poetic, story-like or even a bit quirky.

Madelena’s songwriting has been influenced by a wide range of genres. Whether solo or with her band, her music and performances – which contain elements of jazz, gospel, classical and pop – have been described as pop, rock, punk, folk and cabaret. This is because of the vast array of music she was exposed to from her parents and older siblings during her childhood, as well as from her time at university studying contemporary voice.

Apart from her own original gigs, she has been a member of the prominent Hobart cover band Fun Under Covers. She has also performed with various groups doing Gospel music, Jazz, Jump and Jive, Latin, Fusion, Classical and Opera.

Picture It

“I came up with the chorus of this song one evening when dwelling on the future. I was asking myself questions such as ‘Where will I be in five years? Where would I like to be? And what do I want to be doing?’ I was nearing the end of my university degree and I was in a long distance relationship. Both factors raised the question ‘What’s next?’ Overall, ‘Picture It’ is about staying positive and open-minded when big decisions need to be made.”

Treasure Hunting

“Treasure Hunting is a song about searching and ownership, or at least a sense of ownership. It is a song about the effect time has on relationships and ideas as well as material things. I experimented with the music to create contrasting moods. One of a moment suspended in time and the other of coming back down to earth or back to reality.”

Games

“I wrote this song about games that girls and boys play with each other.”
